Wayside Christmas Day Street Party - Dec 25, 2011

Our infamous Christmas Day Street Party was filled with love and joy. People danced and sang and ate. Thank you to the amazing volunteers and organisers and to all the individuals and businesses that donated time, money, food, equipment and gifts to make the day a success.

You can see photos from the day here.

“It's not ideas that change the world or lift humanity to greater heights. Real good is not the product of reflection or philosophy. Real good is done. It happens. Christmas Day at Wayside is an event that really can and really does show us a better way for humanity. It's hard work feeding 700 meals without a kitchen. It's not easy to clear a street and set up tables and chairs. It's tricky serving so many people in a hurry. Clean up is always unromantic. The day however is a human event that changes most of us. It lifts us and inspires us that so many people gladly give up their Christmas Day to serve others. It fills us with hope to participate in an act that creates community. Everyone is welcome; not just poor people but all people who would otherwise be lonely. Before the end of the day we saw street people dancing in the street with others in the community joining in. For one day in the year, the distinctions between rich and poor, between housed and homeless, between ill and well, evaporated.
