Wayside Stories

John's Story

I've been coming to the Wayside for 12 months. The Wayside gives me a sense of belonging in its community. I grew up as an orphan so I never had any kind of family or sense of belonging. Since coming here, I've med all kinds of interesting, down-to-earth people and I've learned to respect other people's perspectives.

I'm trying to work through my alcohol issues and at times it's difficult to be around people with alcohol, so when this happens I go inside the Wayside or go away. They have painting classes here and this has inspired me to start experimenting with colours and famous Sydney landmarks. I also like painting country landscapes and beach scenes (I have sold about 12 of these).

The Wayside Art Exhibition in May featured my painting of a Bengal tiger beneath a full moon and starry sky.

Once a week we go on outings, for example canoeing, indoor rock-climbing or visiting Bronte Beach, and these trips help take my mind off alcohol. I also enjoy the cooking classes here, learning new recipes to try at home.

I really get a lot out of coming to the Wayside - the staff are very supportive and the sense of community is invaluable.

John.
